A problem I see amongst many people in the gym is that they spend a lot of time working out and hitting the weights hard but end up seeing little in the way of muscle on their bodies at the end of it all. They are left scratching their heads and wondering just what does it take to get the body that they so desire?

Visualise - I now that this may seem a little strange to some of you but this is usually the top tip I give to people when asked how to get muscular. The simple reason is that if you don't have a definite picture in your mind on how you want to look then how can the mind communicate to your body what you want it to do? As soon as your mind has a clear vision of what you want to achieve then you will start to workout with a purpose you never knew possible and you begin to see results you never thought possible.

Diet - I am often shocked to see people drinking cans of fizzy pop and eating bags of potato chips after they have finished working out at the gym. You might not believe me but I can assure you that I have seen it with my own two eyes. The simple fact is that you can workout in the gym every day for the next 6 months and see very little results if you are eating the wrong foods. My advice if you are just starting out would be to start off slow and gradually start to cut junk food out of your diet. After a few weeks you will start to become more disciplined and the wrong type of foods won't even be an option anymore.

Recovery - If you workout too often then the chances of you ever getting the muscular body that you want is not very good. Your muscles need time to rest and recuperate so that they are able to properly repair themselves and grow back bigger. Another important aspect to this is to make sure that you get enough sleep, usually around 8 hours a night. Ensuring that you get a good nights sleep will mean that you will be refreshed enough to attack your workouts with the proper intensity.

As you can see some of my best tips on how to get muscular have nothing to do with the workouts themselves but the things you do away from the gym. Of course, the workouts are very important but if you look at the above steps then will see that building the foundation for those workouts is just as important.

Imagine you are at the beach. Boy is it hot. You have just arrived, so you find a spot and lay down your towel. It's the weekend and the beach is full of scantily-clad bodies. You are wearing a white tee shirt, a little tighter than the ones you used to wear before you started those lower ab workout exercises. You take off your sneakers and socks, then, as you sit on your towel and look around, you see that one or two people are taking a quick glance at your toned physique. Then, slowly and deliberately you grab the hem of your tee shirt and pull it over your head. Just look at those firm abs rippling as the muscles flex. Can that body really belong to you? Now, you scan the faces all around you and realize that the furtive glances have become looks of undisguised lust!

If you are nowhere near the sea, maybe you should just get out into the sun and wash that car. It's the weekend and it's hot. With your new-found confidence in your body, you are happy to be wearing shorts to show off your leaner, fitter legs, and you are barefoot. Target Heart Rate for Burning Fat

Exercising requires energy and the body gets this energy by burning fat. Health professionals have determined that by exercising within a particular heart rate zone will burn fat faster. Staying in this zone while working out will yield maximum benefit.

Calculate Target Heart Rate
Your heart rate is determined by age, fitness and gender. Tests are available to help calculate these rates, but they can be complex and for this reason these rates are based on estimates.

Target Heart-Rate Formula
A widely used estimate is 220 minus age which is accepted as the maximum pulse or the top of the zone for both men and women. This equation is a good place to start for physically fit individuals. For overweight people or those that have been away from exercise for some time a smaller maximum value is recommended.

Note: Before you start a new exercise program, always check with your heart doctor first. He or she is best equipped to decide about your ability to exercise, how soon, and how much.

Once you have determined your heart rate you can determine what your fat burning zone is. It is suggested that you train at 55% - 85% of your maximum pulse. But for those just starting to exercise it is recommend that you train at the low end which is 55% to 65% of your maximum.

Why does heart rate matter?
Fat burns best at a specific rate which is relative to your resting pulse. When you first start exercising it is suggested that you keep your pulse at the lower end of the scale. As you progress you can increase this rate and your fat burning zone will increase along with it.

Understanding what your ideal heart rate is will prevent you from working out too much and putting unnecessary strain on your body and your heart. Working within this zone will allow your system to recuperate and grow gradually and you will develop a zest for exercise. If you train too hard it becomes too much like work, you walk around feeling sore and tired, and you might lose interest.

Taking your Resting Pulse
Before you can measure your pulse you need to be in a resting position. Take it first thing in the morning after you have been sitting comfortably for a while. Find your pulse on your wrist or neck and count the number of heart beats in a 15 second period. Multiply this number by four to get total beats per minute (bpm). This is your resting heart rate.

Training Zone - Your Burn Fat Exercise Zone
In order to calculate your training zone, you start by calculating your maximum pulse. Using 220 subtract your age. This yields your maximum heart rate that you should not exceed when exercising. However it is important to stay within the zone percentages given above in order to burn fat optimally. For example if you are 30 years old and are just starting out, you should subtract 30 from 220. This gives you 190 bpm. The number your heart rate then needs to stay between while exercising would be 104.5 and 123.5 bpm (or 55% and 65%). If you are athletic and in good shape, your heart rate zone should stay between 104.5 and around 162 bpm (55% and 85%).

Knowing what these figures are and understanding what to do with them are two different things though. If your heart rate drops lower than your zone your workout will be ineffective. Yet if it exceeds your zone you are overworking and possibly putting your health at risk at least in the beginning stages of exercising. If you want to maximize your workout and protect your health it is imperative that you stay within your zone rates.

If you are operating out of your target zone your breathing will be a give away. You should be comfortable while exercising. Your breathing will become even and not labored. You should not go out of breath, if you do you are exercising too hard and need to slow down. This means that you should be able to talk without discomfort while you exercise.

How do you keep track?
Apart from monitoring the comfort level of your breathing there are more accurate scientific ways to keep track of your zone rate. Most cardiovascular gym equipment such as stationary bikes, treadmills, rowing and elliptical machines provide heart rate sensors you can place on your palm when exercising or a belt you can place around your chest. Gym professionals are also a source of valuable information and before commencing on a regime ask them to calculate your resting heart rate, maximum heart rates and zone rate.

If you are taking your exercise out of the gym and you want total peace of mind then you may want to invest in your own personal heart rate monitor. This usually comes with a watch that you can wear on your wrist. Many allow you to set your heart rate training zone and will beep if your exceed your maximum, so you can train in your zone.

Define 'Natural Weight Loss' For Me

Seriously. What is your definition of Natural Weight Loss?

Is it -

Taking a natural herbal supplement?

Eating low fat foods?

Cutting out carbs?

Drinking diet pop?

Eating stuff that tastes like cardboard?

Or are you loading up on the hottest berries and seeds? What are you? A Bird? C'mon already with all the gimmicks. Is any of that stuff really natural?

How about eating like a human being? Wouldn't that be natural? A human being naturally needs and enjoys a multitude of foods. Your body is a complex machine that needs a specific mix of nutrients to operate correctly.

You can't live on just vegetables. As a matter of fact, your body needs some fat to be able to process the nutrients in the vegetables. Now isn't that a cruel irony? All this time you've been cutting out fat, and you've been depleting your body of nutrients. Then your body stays fat because it's not processing foods correctly.

I've had people write me asking why they still have no energy when they eat a vegetarian diet with no carbs. Simple, they're not eating anything that provides energy. Vegetables provide a lot of healthy benefits, and you need to eat a lot of them, but they don't produce energy.

A lot of people have mistakenly cut out fruits because they contain sugar. Fruits contain just as many vital nutrients as vegetables, just a different set of nutrients. You need to eat as many fruits as you do vegetables.

And what about protein? You need protein. Yes, broccoli contains protein - but it's not a whole protein. But you've heard that you shouldn't eat meat. So what about protein powder? Unfortunately, protein power is made of soy protein, and as it turns out - soy is very dangerous.

And is that natural? Before some marketing genius decided that soy was a good food source, soy was considered a weed. I remember farmers shaking their heads. They were getting paid lots of money for planting weeds. They changed over from tobacco to soy because they made a lot more money - but they sure couldn't understand it. And they sure weren't feeding it to their families.

We're not meant to survive on berries and seeds. We're not meant to ingest chemicals. People do all this crazy stuff and then wonder why their body isn't working right.

If you're looking for natural weight loss, or natural health - just eat like a human was designed to eat. That's right, foods that are natural for a human being to eat.

That means getting rid of all the corn syrup and chemical concoctions that pass for food these days, and eating a balanced diet that contains all of the food groups - fruits, vegetables, grains, even meats, eggs and cheese.

What about milk? Is that natural?

Not after being weened it's not. Humans are the only animals to ingest another animals body fluids. I find that gross myself. And what you buy in the grocery store is about as far from natural as you can get. Milk is responsible for all sorts of problems. Did you know that type I diabetes is caused by giving a baby cow's milk too early? Think about that. If you have joint problems, arthritis, asthma, or other inflammatory diseases, cut out the milk and see how much better you feel. I don't drink milk. I'm healthy. My sister drinks milk, and she's not. Unscientific, I know, but hey.

If you eat the way you're supposed to, you'll weigh what you're supposed to. It's really as simple as that.

The good news is - you can stop giving up a bunch of stuff that someone has labeled 'bad for you' and you can stop eating the gross stuff that some bean counter decided should be labeled 'good for you' , and start enjoying real food again. The way humans were intended to.
